About Gulf Breeze Middle School

Gulf Breeze Middle School literally is the middle school in a complex of three schools located in the heart of a small community situated on a peninsula in Northwest Florida. We are a bedroom community to Pensacola and surrounded on three sides by water: Santa Rosa Sound on the south, Pensacola Bay on the west, and Escambia Bay on the north. On the east side, the Naval Live Oaks segment of the Gulf Islands National Seashore forms a two-mile wide forested boundary.
Our wonderful school opened in 1967 as Gulf Breeze Junior High School under the leadership of founding Principal Walter F. Karr and operated as a Junior High school  for three years. Its original 410 students were in grades seven through nine. In 1970, when it was on double sessions with Gulf Breeze High School while that facility was being constructed, the school espoused the middle school philosophy and changed its name to Gulf Breeze Middle School. That year Gulf Breeze Middle School and Hobbs Middle School became the first middle schools in Santa Rosa County, with classes for students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. For the past several years, following the construction of Woodlawn Beach Middle School near the middle of the Fairpoint Peninsula, and the earlier opening of Holley-Navarre Middle School near the eastern border of the County, the middle school student population on our western end of the peninsula has stabilized at approximately 900 students. Our student body draws from the adjacent Gulf Breeze Elementary School and Pensacola Beach Elementary School, (a charter school which actually is based in Escambia County) and splits the students of Oriole Beach Elementary School with Woodlawn Beach Middle School. The great majority of our students move up to Gulf Breeze High School, though a few each year opt to participate in the International Baccalaureate program at Pensacola High School.
